DAY 9  SORRENTO - CASERTA - ROME

After breakfast in the hotel we will depart to Caserta to visit the Royal palace. Created by the Bourbon king Charles III in the mid-18th century to rival Versailles and the Royal Palace in Madrid, is exceptional for the way in which it brings together a magnificent palace with its park and gardens, as well as natural woodland, hunting lodges and a silk factory. It is an eloquent expression of the enlightenment in material form, integrated into, rather than imposed on, its natural setting. In 1996, the Palace of Caserta was listed among the world heritage sites on the ground that it was ‘the swan song of the spectacular art of the baroque from which it adopted all the features needed to create the illusions of multidirectional space’. We will visit the apartments richly decorated with gold, stucco and marble and contain empire style furnishings and fine pavements and the park covering an area of some hundred hectares and its beautiful fountains. After the visit we will head to Rome for the last overnight. Overnight in Rome
